Ground Zero

Ground Zero is such an interesting place with so many elements to it. There is the construction happening all around the area of the two fallen towers. The new World Trade Centre is building up around the large memorial, with four new buildings. The biggest and most prominent of these new buildings is the Freedom Tower, which will become the largest building in North America upon its completion. The Freedom Tower stands looking down on the space that once held the twin towers and is now two pools in the exact spots where the towers stood.
We were lucky enough to be visiting with Dad which allowed us a visit to ‘Firehouse Ten’ the fire station that is located on the same block as the Twin Towers were. This fire station is closed to the public, but thanks to some friends of Dad’s we were welcomed in for a tour. The station lost 6 of the 12 fire fighters who responded on 9/11, and each of the engines in the station now pays tribute to those 6 who lost their lives.
The small museum holds an incredible display of objects from the towers as well as giving a huge insight into the timeline of 9/11. It has quotes from people who survived and people who lost family members. There are two huge walls that are filled with photos of each person who lost their life.
It’s an extremely interesting place but also very moving.
