Santa Monica/Newport Beach

We had a bit of a sleep in before we were up and hiring bikes to ride to Santa Monica.
The change between Venice Beach and Santa Monica was obvious, the number of homeless people dropped drastically and the sidewalks and roads were clean and taken care of. It was definitely more comfortable in Santa Monica and there seemed to be a lot less crazy/drugged up people around.

It was a nice ride along the beach and we found a nice little cafe for breakfast along the 3rd Street Promenade. After we suffered through giant mugs of black american coffee we had a nice, relaxing day wandering along the Promenade.

As it got later we decided to take a ride on the roller coaster at the pier and have a go in the arcade. One turn on the Wheel Of Fortune game and 1000 tickets later and we had earned ourselves a magnet, keychain and a deck of cards. A quick ride home, dinner and we were in bed for another early night.

Neither of us was particularly sad to leave Venice Beach or LA behind as we headed for a night just outside Newport Beach. It took us a couple of buses, a train and a cab but we managed to get here with time left to have a look around.
It was definitely worth venturing down here, it's so much nicer than any part of LA. We didn't see any homeless people and it was a relaxed beach town (just like it is on The O.C. tv show!).

We had a look around and had a nice dinner at a cool little restaurant (which had 37 TV's all showing football). After dinner we walked from Newport pier to Balboa Pier, which was a little bit longer than we were expecting. It was a nice walk, with the ocean on one side and million dollar beach front houses on the other.

It was a really nice night and a better way to finish up in California. Tomorrow we are off to Canada, flying into Toronto. The forecast at the moment is a high of 2 degrees and snow, we wanted cold!
